Forget thee? Bid the forest-birds
forget their sweetest tune?
Moultrie
Her stomach comfortably warm with sassafrass tea, turtle eggs and raspberries, Pamela watched Snow Owl cautiously as she prepared food to place inside the black iron kettle heating over the fire. It was Snow Owl's icy glances that made Pamela's insides recoil. It was evident that this Indian squaw hated her, and Pamela understood why. Strong Bear had chosen a white woman over his Indian wife to spend the full night in his cabin. And though Strong Bear hadn't spent the night with Pamela, the short time that he had been with her had been enough to give cause for Snow Owl to be jealous . . . even to hate Pamela.
But Pamela couldn't confess to anything less than the same sort of jealousy toward Snow Owl. Strong Bear had most surely made love to her the previous night. But wouldn't he? She was his wife! For a while Pamela had forgotten this truth. She had even forgotten that she must hate Strong Bear for what he had done to her family, and also for deceiving her into believing she was the only woman in his life.
She had her proof of this latter deceit, and until he proved his innocence of the other, he would remain guilty in her eyes!
Still, Pamela's insides were unwillingly stirred into a strange sort of mushiness when she allowed herself to recall how Strong Bear's hands and lips had so aroused her again. It had been wrong of her to enjoy that time with him on his bunk in the guise of her being asleep. But it had been so easy to enjoy it, while at the back of her mind lay the part of her that was accusing him of so many ugly things. For a few moments with Strong Bear she had been able to forget Anthony and Robert.
Her senses had now returned, and she was aware of the realities of life. She must find a way to escape. She must try to locate Robert. Perhaps he was imprisoned in this very village.
"Snow Owl, are there white slaves in your village other than myself?" Pamela blurted, placing a wooden platter aside. She attempted to smooth the wrinkles from the skirt of her dress, frowning at the ripped ruffle at its hem. It only took her fingers touching her hair to know that it was tangled. She must look very ugly in the eyes of the Indian squaw.
Pamela hungered for a hairbrush and clean dress, even a cake of soap with which to clean herself. But all of these comforts would have to come later. Escape. Robert. She must keep these thoughts foremost in her mind, not her vanity!
Snow Owl glanced sourly at Pamela, then resumed cutting wild carrots into slices, dropping them into the water warming over the fire. "You no slave," she said solemnly. "White woman has been chosen by Chief Strong Bear to become ne-we-wah, wife. Snow Owl second wife of importance. White woman soon to be first wife of importance.
